Hinks Delcrest Centre: Parent Seminar Series

Supporting Children and Parents to Thrive Using Mindfulness-Based Practices

When: April 11, 6:30 PM – 9 PM

This experiential workshop will engage participants in a variety of age-appropriate, creative and playful ways to share mindfulness practice with children and parents, all infused with mindfulness principles – such as acceptance, letting go, patience, non-judgement, non-striving and compassion.  It will explore the intersection of mindfulness and neuroscience and offer accessible ways to share this exciting information with children and families.

Mindfulness for Parents

Program name:  Mindfulness for Parents – Half Day
When:  Saturday, April 30, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Where:  The Centre for Mindfulness Studies, 180 Sudbury Street, Toronto, M6J 0A8
Cost:  $80 (no HST)

Description: Parents can learn to be fully present with their children and teenagers – in both shared moments of joy as well as when their buttons have been pushed to the limit.

This program can help parents facing common challenges such as comforting a colicky baby, responding to toddler tantrums, helping children cope with school, or communicating with teenagers.

Mindfulness can also support parents with practices which nurture moments of self-care so they can slow down and savour their children’s and teens’ day-to-day experiences.

In this experiential workshop, participants will learn:

  • A variety of mindfulness practices and how they apply to parenting
  • How to develop present-moment awareness in day-to-day parenting
  • Ways to avoid ‘knee-jerk’ parenting responses

This program is suitable for parents and expectant parents. People new to mindfulness are most welcome.

Mindfulness Everyday
Mindful Parents Group 6-Week Session

Where: Toronto Centre for Psychotherapy: located at

Cost: $400 (includes CDs for home practice)

Description: The program is modeled on The Stress Reduction Clinic program at The University of Massachusetts Medical School. Core components of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program have been integrated into a curriculum that puts the experience of the parent at the heart of the practice.

The heart of the program is the development of mindfulness meditation skills supported by teachings delivered in a psycho-educational format. Taught in a non-sectarian way, these experiential practices focus on emotional awareness, meditation, movement exercises, discussions and at-home exercises. Parents are asked to set aside some time at home to practice the mediation with a series of CDs provided with the program. Discussion and sharing among parents is also part of the program.

Teacher:  Sue Hutton. Sue has over 20 years experience as a social worker, and has infused her social work practice with mindfulness since the 1990’s, and then focused her post-graduate MSW research on mindfulness. Sue received her professional training in the US in delivery of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Jon Kabat-Zinn in 2007.

Mindful Parenting Group

When: Mondays: January 25 – March 7, 2016, 9:30 to 11:30 am (6 consecutive Mondays, excluding Family Day)
or Thursdays: January 28-March 3rd, 6:30 to 9:30 pm
Where: 381-A Eglinton Ave. West, 2nd floor, Side Entrance (off of Elmsthorpe Ave), Toronto, Ontario, M5N 1A3
Cost: $425 per person, $750 per couple

Description: This psycho-educational, and practice-oriented program is designed to introduce parents to the principles and practices of Mindful parenting with an emphasis on the unique challenges of raising a child or teen with anxiety or mood related difficulties.

Mindful parenting is intended to enhance parental presence, increase attunement, and reduce parental stress and reactivity. This treatment program aims to improve emotional stability in parents, thereby providing them with a choice about how to navigate the unique challenges of raising a child with social and emotional difficulties

Through interactive discussion and mindfulness practice exercises, parents in the program will begin to experience and learn:

  • Skills to manage parental stress
  • Practices to decrease reactivity and remain calm and balanced during stressful times
  • Strategies to help respond to parenting challenges with kindness, and wisdom rather than reacting automatically
  • Learn ways to improve parental self care

Mindful Parenting – 1/2 Day Retreat

Description: This ½ day retreat is designed to offer past participants from a mindfulness program an opportunity to re-ignite their practice, and set the tone for the start of the new year. The morning will offer you an opportunity to pause and refresh your understanding of mindfulness  practices and inspire your intentions moving forward. This will be a practice-oriented retreat with longer meditations. The last ½ hour of the session will be for discussion
